Education Library - Post
and Core
Why is Post and Core Needed?
Post and Core treatment is used on teeth that have been
root canal treated and have very little tooth structure
left. After a tooth has had Root Canal Treatment the tooth
is often very brittle. Similar to a dead tree branch compared
to a live branch.
Teeth that have been Root Canal Treated need to be covered
with a crown. If there is not enough tooth structure, a
post and core is placed prior to a crown.
What Are The Steps?
The first step is to remove some of the root filling in
the tooth. Then the canal or canals are enlarged and shaped
to make room for a post that will give strength to the tooth.
The post is cemented into place in one of the canals.
Then a core filling is placed on top and around the post.
The final step is to shape the core filling and tooth in
preparation for a crown.
